Initially issued on Sep. 16, 1951 and substituting for originally dominant political state-owned newspapers, the United Daily News has created a new aspect regarding democratization and liberalization of private-owned newspapers in Taiwan, and has always sustained its high influence and the maximum as well as gradually increased volume of circulation afterward. As one of the top newspapers in Taiwan, the United Daily News, founded by the media veteran - Wang, Tih-Wu, was a united version of the Popular Daily and the Economic Daily News initially and formally became the United Daily News currently by integrating three newspapers in 1953. In 1980, as a record among all Chinese private-owned newspapers, the volume of circulation of the United Daily News exceeded one million first. With the newspaper ban lift in 1989, the era of unprecedented competition among Taiwanese newspapers arrived. Notwithstanding strong challenge from the Apple Daily, the China Times, and the Liberty Times, the United Daily News is still ranked one of the top four newspapers in Taiwan.
