Taiwan, one of the world’s leading high-tech manufacturing bases, has been Intel’s important strategic partner to advance the development of the global WiMAX industry.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) signed the first Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Intel to jointly promote the WiMAX industry in 2005. Taiwan has become one of Intel’s leading global partners with excellent innovation and manufacturing capabilities.

In order to accelerate the deployment of WiMAX, Shih Yen-Shiang, Administrative Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs and Sean Maloney, Executive Vice President and Chief and Marketing Officer of Intel, signed the extended MOU on April 21 with the presence of Ho Mei-Yueh, Chairperson of the Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD).

The goal of the new MOU is to create a business entity jointly by MOEA, Intel, and the private sectors in Taiwan, in an attempt to develop and test innovative applications, mobile devices, and system integration framework based upon WiMAX technology, and offer consulting services for WiMAX Network Infrastructure.

With Intel’s technical support and experience in testing WiMAX technology worldwide, Taiwan will soon be able to engage in the testing and development of network interoperability, the promotion of All-IP Network, and the deployment of WiMAX technology.

In the past three years, according to Deputy Minister Shih Yen-Shiang, MOEA and Intel have been actively facilitating domestic Internet businesses to develop WiMAX equipment, organizing expositions and conferences on WiMAX technology, and seeking the support from WiMAX Forum.

The partnership not only results in the rapid growth of Taiwan’s WiMAX industry, but also enhances Taiwan’s capability of delivering WiMAX applications and total solutions, and developing Mobile WiMAX user devices. It is the MOEA’s hope that Intel and Taiwan can consolidate such a meaningful partnership and further sustain the growth of Taiwan’s WiMAX industry.

Ho Mei-yueh, Chairperson of CEPD, points out that the key objective of Taiwan’s partnership with Intel is to establish a joint business entity in order to integrate the domestic supply chain and form a complete WiMAX ecosystem in Taiwan. Such a partnership will enable Taiwan to deliver total solutions and make the maximum contribution with Intel to the world’s WiMAX industry.

Sean Maloney, Executive Vice President and Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of Intel, also highly regards Intel’s partnership with Taiwan. “The broadband infrastructure and complete industry ecosystem in Taiwan amounts to an outstanding foundation for the development of WiMAX. The completion of Taiwan’s broadband wireless licensing marks a new chapter in the development of WiMAX and building on our previous agreement in 2005, Intel is pleased to further collaborate with the Ministry of Economic Affairs again to jointly promote the development of WiMAX in Taiwan.”

In addition to continued investment in Taiwan’s WiMAX industry, Intel will also collaborate with Taiwan on various international marketing campaigns. For example, Intel will be the diamond-level sponsor to the “2008 WiMAX Expo, Taipei” held in June, in which the applicability and mobility of WiMAX will be demonstrated. Currently, MOEA and Intel have established a taskforce to discuss the prospective businesses for investment, amount of investment, and operation of the joint business entity. All the details are expected to be settled by the end of 2008.
